JAA's Volunteer Hot Lunch Program
The Hot Lunch program has changed a lot over the years. It has moved from the previous kitchen in the gym, to the breezeway, and now to the mobile kitchen located behind the school. One thing that has remained consistent throughout the years is that volunteers have always been the heart of the program. Parents, grandparents, church members, anyone who was looking for a way to help our school, have volunteered to help serve fresh, hot meals to our students.
Over the last two years the program has struggled to find the help necessary to run the program. Many times school staff have worked in the kitchen to cover days when there were no volunteers. This not only effects the time that staff have to work on projects, but it takes them away from being able to answer the phone, be available for students who may be sick or injured, or help teachers who may need assitance. Because of this, if we are unable to get enough volunteers we will have to reduce the number of days lunch is served from five to three.
The goal of the Hot Lunch program is to have enough volunteers so that they are needed only once a month. Volunteers come in around 10:30 a.m. to begin preparing the menu for the day. At 11:45 a.m. the first lunches are served. After all the students have been served volunteers clean up the kitchen area and are usually done by about 1:30 p.m. Three hours once a month is all we need if enough people volunteer to help. Volunteers get a free lunch that day and free lunch ticket for their student(s) to use at any time.
If you would like to help, please call our office at 268-2433, or e-mail at registrar@jaxaa.org.
